CIFAS complaint - CIFAS does not keep personal data?

CIFAS complaint: "The CIFAS office does not hold data on consumers to which there is a right of subject access under the Data Protection legislation. The main CIFAS database is held by the UK's Credit Reference Agencies. Serving a subject access request on the CIFAS office is therefore a waste of money, time and effort."

Our response: On the day that CIFAS director name censored due to subsequent complaint (censored due to CIFAS's legal threats) wrote this complaint to us (24 June 1999), CIFAS had registered the following types of data with the Data Protection Registrar: (Data purposes 3 and 4 are particularly interesting).

PURPOSE 1: P001 Personnel/Employee Administration
Typical activities are: recruitment; recording of working time; administration and payment of wages, salaries, pensions and other benefits with deductions; employee assessment and training; negotiation or communication with employees; manpower and career planning; compliance with company policy and/or legislation in relation to health, safety and other employment matters; analysis for management purposes and statutory returns.
PURPOSE 2: P010 Membership Administration
Typical activities are: recruitment; maintenance of professional standards; administration of subscriptions; maintenance of lists of consultants; production of directories or yearbooks; processing of enquiries or complaints; provision of advice or assistance to members; analysis for management purposes and statutory returns.
PURPOSE 3: P058 Crime Prevention And Prosecution Of Offenders
Typical activities are; maintaining details of offenders and suspected offenders, witnesses and other relevant persons; details of information received; details of resources directed towards this purpose; analysis for management purposes and statutory returns.
Purpose:
Capitalisation and spelling is as in the Data Protection registry
CREDIT FRAUD IDENTIFICATION & AVOIDANCE, MAINTAIN DETAILS FO FRAUDSTERS AND ATTEMPTED FRAUDSTERS, ANALYSIS OF INFORMATION FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT AUTHORITIES, AND MEMBERS.
PURPOSE 4: P040 Other Consultancy and Advisory Services
Typical activities are: giving advice or rendering professional services; acting on behalf of clients; analysis for management purposes and statutory returns.
Purpose:
Capitalisation is as in the Data Protection registry
CREDIT FRAUD IDENTIFICATION & AVOIDANCE, ANALYSIS OF INFORMATION FOR MEMBERS AND POTENTIAL MEMBERS
PURPOSE 5: P003 Marketing and Selling (excluding direct marketing to individuals)
Typical activities are: the classification, rating or checking of individuals or organisations; advertising and other promotion; dealing with complaints or enquiries; analysis for management purposes and statutory returns.
PURPOSE 6: P006 Public Relations and External Affairs
Typical activities are: the identification of organisations or individuals representations or lobbying on matters of concern to the data user; the maintenance of associated records; analysis for management purposes and statutory returns.
PURPOSE 7: P007 Management of Agents and Intermediaries
Typical activities are: the identification, checking and selection of intermediaries; recording and processing payments including commission; monitoring performance; analysis for management purposes and statutory returns.
PURPOSE 8: P009 Business and Technical Intelligence
Typical activities are: competitor analysis; accquisition and divestment planning; market forecasting; recording and monitoring technical developments; analysis for management purposes and statutory returns.
